Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How can I schedule with you?

A. You can send a message through the contact form. You can send a text requesting an appointment or consult to 801-839-5130. You can send an email.

Or you can book a free consult directly on my calendly. (this is not my therapy appointment calendar- it is only for complimentary consults.) :)

Q. I don't live in Utah. Can we still work together?

A. At this time I am only a licensed therapist in the State of Utah. If you live in Utah I can provide therapy. If you don't live in Utah I can provide coaching, consulting, or group/community presentations. (Coaching and therapy are not the same and any services that are not therapy will not include therapy.)

Q. How do I know if I need therapy/counseling?

A: Are you unhappy with yourself, your relationships or some aspects of your life and have been for some time? Does your stress, anxiety, worry, depression, frustration, bad moods, etc.. make your life harder than most people's seem to be or worse than you want it to be? Do people in your life suggest you should talk to someone and get help? Is it hard for you to do things you want to or are "supposed to", such as going to school or work, getting along with others? These are some of the things therapy good is for.

In a perfect world there wouldn't be a stigma (internal or external) about getting help, so if it feels bad to you or "nothing's wrong & you don't need help" even though you're usually not happy with your life or the situations you find yourself in, PLEASE have a conversation with me or someone else. We are simply professionals for things like "I have a partner, I have a parent, I have a sibling, I have a boss, I have a kid... and we fight/they're annoying/it's not going well."   "My brain won't stop thinking and it makes it hard to go places/make friends/sleep at night/believe that I'm safe".  "I don't know why but I can't focus/be happy/get out of bed/do what I should/care about the things I used to.'

Q: How long does therapy take?

A: This is so different for everyone and is completely dependent on how many issues we're working with and the level of severity and impact on your life.  I'd say you could plan on four to nine months for almost anyone, although some people and circumstances require longer support and some people get what they need in just a few weeks. I do request that you plan on 1x/week for the first 3-4 weeks and then we can decide if every week or every other week will be the better way forward.   We will continue to check in and scale back as progress is made. Some people reach a point where they feel "done" and others want to have periodic "check ins" and either way is okay with me.

Q. How much does it cost? Do you take insurance?

A1: I am not paneled with any insurance providers however I will be glad to provide a superbill if you'd like to submit it to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement for therapy sessions. My hourly rate is $150 for individual sessions and $180 for couples or high conflict divorce or family court appointments.  (A therapy hour includes 50 minutes for us together and 10 minutes for my charting after.)

I know it may seem to you that the cost should be the same for the same appointment time however please understand I put time into your sessions outside of our appointments together and couples work and high conflict divorce/family work is a lot more involved for me. Additionally, I'm proud to invest in my continued education in these specialized areas of difficulty with the highest level research-based groups for your best interest and my rates reflect that as well.  (The Gottman Method for marriage/relationship work; The AFCC - Association of Family and Conciliation Courts for high conflict divorce and co-parenting and parent time planning work.)

A2. Because affordable access to mental health care is so important, I maintain 20-30% of my client hours for very low pay/sliding scale clients who otherwise could not afford to receive therapy at all. At this time those slots are filled but if you need a lower pay option I am happy to add you to my waitlist.

Q. Do you have an office we can come in to?

A: I work via Telehealth (Zoom) for most appointments however, we can discuss if other arrangements might be available if this is very important to you. Other options might include meeting at a co-working private space, walking at a park, or in limited circumstances coming to your home. Telehealth (Zoom) is most likely for all of our appointments and is what my current rates are based on.

Q. What ages do you work with?

A: I've had success with children as young as 4, and have had some elder clients in their 80's. Due to the nature of Telehealth I generally don't work with children younger than 7 or 8 anymore, especially if they aren't naturally very verbal because they don't have the attention span needed with a screen- even though I adjust to their level and interests in other ways. For younger children's issues I usually just work with the parents, which is always part of helping a child. We can discuss and see what will work best for your needs and situation.

Q. How do I know if your coaching service is a better fit for me?

A:  If your relationships, work or school, home and family, and the way you see yourself are generally okay and you don't have emotional or trauma related issues that hold you back but you know you could get better at making decisions, communicating with others, or want to learn some new skills and habits, learn some new perspectives, figure out and follow a plan for some area of your life.... Coaching might be the right fit for you. We can determine this together; just contact me for a brief intro call.

Q. My marriage/relationship is really struggling. Can you help? What if my spouse/partner won't talk to you?

A: I am so sorry to hear that and, yes, I can help.  You probably know the best chances for the best outcomes are when both parties want things to get better and are working together toward this, but I've worked with individual men and women who wanted to focus on improving their relationships from their end first. I know sometimes it takes one person to start the process and that is totally fine. Let's have a conversation and evaluate what's going right and wrong and figure out what you want and we'll do what we can to make that happen.

I am here to support you in any phase of your relationships - dating, pre-marriage, long term committed/marriage, difficulties in relationship, break ups/divorce. However, I do not work with couples who are seeking therapy because they want to rebuild trust in their parter after infidelity/affairs. If this is your situation we can talk about it during an intro call, but be prepared I may need to refer you to another provider.

As a side note, I am LGBTQ+ affirming and I am also affirming of consensual, non-monogamous relationships and other "non-traditional" fully consensual adult relationship issues. While I do not specialize in these additional areas I am open to working with you on them if that is your situation and I have had a large percentage of my clients who are.
